How will You Answer the Question : “What is Your Salary Expectation?”

What is your salary expectation? is the most important question that is asked in every type of job interview. You may not be given the job if your salary expectations are more than what the employer can give you. So you will have to be very cautious while giving the answer to “What are your salary expectations?”

The salary expectations vary a lot. The expected salary for fresher will be different from the experienced fellow. Even the candidate having degree will have different salary expectations than the candidate having diploma. In addition to this there are many factors like profile, benefits, incentives, location, market et al that determine the salary. But the big question still remains there it is that How will you answer the question : “What is your salary expectation?” To answer this question consider the following points.

As a Fresher
If you are a fresher than the company's standard, pay packages and market condition will determine the salary for you. As a fresher you cannot demand more as you need more of learning than the salary. But if you really have a sound knowledge and matching qualification then you expected salary can be more than the other freshers. To answer the salary expectation question you can mention your education and academic achievements while giving a salary range.

As an Experienced Fellow
You will have to look other aspects as well if you have experience in the industry. You need position and growth opportunities along with good salary. Like if you are being given good position then salary is not the most important thing. Also while deciding the salary do check the quality of people you are working with, location and culture of the company et al. Make sure to prepare yourself to answer the question if you find the salary by the employer at interview is less than your expectation and industry's present status. Keep in mind the following things while giving salary expectations answer:

Market Scenario
Before facing the interview it is better to check the market scenario and the present pay scales of the industry. Find out the candidate having similar experience and education. If possible get the package he or she is drawing. You can expect the similar package. The companies that you are comparing for salary must be similar in size, status and value in the market. market.
Job Profile
Job profile is an important factor that determine the salary expectations. Executive level cannot have more salary than the managerial level candidate. So you cannot expect more than that particular job profile is giving you. Find out what salaries are given at that particular profile. You can check your organization and other organization to reach at average figure for the salary demand.
Location of the Company
If the company is located in the small city that may be for the same profile you will be offered less salary than the organization that is located in the big city or in metro. So while saying the salary part you will have to consider this important aspect as well.
Incentives
In many types of jobs like BPO jobs generally client incentives are add on to salary that vary each month depending upon your performance. If the employer is telling you the incentive schemes then consider that also while deciding on your salary expectations.
Work Responsibilities
Try to pull out the information related to your work responsibilities in the organization during the interview. Sometimes the work responsibilities are more than the salary. Try to match these two factors and then decide your expected salary.
Benefits
Consider the other benefits of position, compensation packages and quality of learning. If these are more than the salary then the salary can go to the back seat. Working in the environment that is giving you good learning and experience is better than the company that is only giving the high salary.
Your Financial Needs
Consider this as well while answering for salary expectation. But never explain your financial situation to the employer. Try to make the balance between your financial need and the salary that is given in the industry for that profile.

Also while answering the question : What is your salary expectations never give one solid figure but give the range that you are expecting.

You can speak for the point that you feel is wrong but once your evaluator has stopped talking. Also talk sensibly, to the point and about your performance.

Trends of Attrition, Poaching & Hiring in India

As the economic recession is melting down, the companies are in the phase of hiring new employees. With the recession there was seen changes in the percentage of attrition. The attrition rate at present in India is about 9-11% which was 18-20% earlier. This has happened because of less available job opportunities as compared to the past. The number of lay offs are also less in India as compared to the rest of world. In India 12.6% companies are considering to lay off their employees whereas in US 55% of companies are doing this. China is at 30.6%, Japan at 17% and Australia at 32.4%.

But with the squeezing of economic recession, new jobs can again give rise to the problem of attrition in India. BPO sector in India has the highest attrition rate. Gone are the days when people used to stick to one job & got retired from the same job after 25-30 years. The trend has changed a lot. Now everyone wants to grow at much faster pace & keep looking for job change & satisfaction. As per the Hay Group's report, the attrition rate in BPO is 23.5% that is followed by Communications (22%) & Retail (18%). The IT industry is seeing 15-16% attrition rate. The major reasons citied are no post job benefits like pension & PF with very less basic salary. Apart from this numerations & bonuses are also very less as compared to other industries that are leading to attrition. Further if the companies will not think from the employee's perspective then the never ending attrition will further increase.

Most of the Call Center or BPO sector hire freshers with or without graduation. So when they get experience of one or two years they look for more greener pasture and thus change the job for more salary & position. But if the attrition rate is compared to the last two to three years then for year 2009 there has been a decrease. This is because of the less availability of new job opportunities due to recession. Attrition at senior level is further low than the executive level because of the job satisfaction both on professional & financial front.

Many companies thus to solve this problem are looking for employees who are already employed. Companies are taking lateral entry that means hiring employees from the other company at same level & salary. Although in India there are anti-poaching laws but yet this is being practiced.

The sectors of financial services, insurance, telecom & retail are seeing major recruitments. New companies & extensions along with the less availability of talent in these sectors have led to more job recruitments in these sectors. As per Manpower Consultants, the employment service providers, there is a scope of 25% employment in India for fourth quarter in 2009 which was 19% in the first quarter. Kotak Mahindra Bank is hiring around 750 people by the end of this year. 100 employees will be freshers. Capegemini is also on the way of hiring employees and expected to increase the work force to 40,000 from 17,000 by 2010. Also major hiring will be seen in Deloitte that was once facing the high attrition.

So overall it can be seen that with the expansion of the companies, the hiring is on. Present day employers are looking for the quality rather than quantity. So you as an employee can brush up your talent to grab the matching job opportunity that will be knocking your door soon.

10 questions you should ask in an interview

When preparing for an interview, most applicants concentrate on formulating well-crafted answers to potential questions from their interviewers. However, not many realize it is just as important to prepare a few good questions they should ask during the interview.

What can asking questions in an interview do for you?

# Show your interest in the position and the company
# Give you an active role in the interview
# Offer explanations about the position and the company, which help you decide if you want to work for that organization
# Showcase the depth of your knowledge and help you guide the discussion into a particular area of expertise

"A few insightful, knowledgeable questions can speak volumes about you and distinguish you from other job candidates. "However as important as asking questions is asking bad questions, such as, 'How many vacation days does the company offer?' is worse."

Ask these 10 questions during your next interview:
1. What are the top three tasks you want the candidate to perform after being hired?
This gives you a concrete idea of the projects you will be working on if hired. Often job ads list general qualities and capabilities the position requires, but the answer to this question will lay out the actual specifics of the job.

2. Why did you choose this company?
The answer will help you determine the organization's strengths and weaknesses with this insider's perspective.

3. How do you see me benefiting the company?
This tells you exactly what they're looking for in a candidate and where they see your strengths.

4. Is there room for growth and advancement?
This points to your drive and initiative and underscores your intent to secure a career, not just a job.

5. Are there opportunities for professional training or further education?
This shows a willingness to learn and adapt as changes in the position or industry occur. Adaptability is very important in today's fickle employment market and may make you very valuable to the company should a reorganization occur.

6. How will I be evaluated and by whom?
This provides insight into the company's corporate culture and the department structure in which you will be working.

7. What is the general culture of the company?
This can tell you if you will fit into the organization. If they're strictly a "suit and tie" operation and you're all about comfort clothes, you may want to rethink the position.

8. Are there other job responsibilities not mentioned in the ad?
This reveals exactly what the ad meant when it said: "...and other duties as assigned." Will you be helping other departments in a pinch? Making coffee? These are things you should know before going any further in the candidate selection process.

9. When will you be making a decision on the successful candidate?
Knowing this helps you gauge when to follow up on the interview.

10. May I call you if other questions arise?
This keeps the door open for further communication.

The interview is an artful conversation designed to help both parties learn more about each other in an effort to decide if the candidate and the position are a good match. Use it as an opportunity to spotlight your accomplishments and determine if the job is right for you.

Law Enforcement Jobs in India

Like in all other nations, a major portion of youth in India too is desirous of joining some or the other kind of law enforcement jobs. Main opportunity in this field is getting a job into the Indian Police Service (IPS). The police infrastructure in India is divided in three levels- State Police, Metropolitan police, and Traffic Police. Each state has a state police force, recruitment in which is done by the State Public Service Commissions through competitive examination. Apart from the state police, major cities have their own police forces which may or may not be subordinate to the state police. Delhi Police, Mumbai Police, Chennai Police and other police agencies in metropolitan cities are under control of Central Government and the officers here are the members of Indian Police Service (IPS) selected by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through Civil Service Examination. The Traffic Police in the small towns is under State Police but in major cities, they come under Metropolitan Police.

The recruitment process for various levels of the police force is different. The Superintendents of Police (SP) are recruited every year by the UPSC through the highly competitive Civil Service Examination and are appointed into the Indian Police Service (IPS). The IPS officers are then assigned to a state force. The officers directly recruited in the State police force may also be promoted to the IPS. Superintendents of Police have to udergo a rigorous training for 44 weeks. The other levels of police force is selected by state or the central government and are trained at Police Recruit Schools. Inspectors are roughly trained for a year, and constables for about 9 months. The training staff for these schools is drawn from the police department itself.

How To Get Job in a Foreign Embassy?

Embassies of all the countries employ 'local staff' of the host nation in order to assist with a variety of jobs. They usually deal with passports, visas, client services, call center for those who wish to travel to that country or countrymen in the host nation. The works needed in embassies can range from simple administrative, drivers, cleaners, press office job, translating etc. to more specialized research, liaising between host government and the embassy. Each embassy is different though their rules are somewhat similar. Usually they hire a citizen of host country or a citizen of the embassy's own country. The basic requirement, as in any other job, is that of a college degree and experience in the related field. However, one of the significant factors is to know the job openings in a timely manner. One can always check the websites of the embassies, call the embassy human resources office, browse through newspapers, and develop contacts who can refer him/her for a job in embassy.

Most of the embassies hire for permanent positions. It becomes quite difficult for the citizen of the host nation to get such permanent positions in an embassy. However, one can always try for a temporary position initially, with the help of related agencies. Many government officers/employees are also deputed in embassies as per the rules of the host nation as well as of the particular embassy. Getting a low level administrative job is always easier here. While doing such low profile job, one comes to know about the tricks of the job as well as develop contacts and friends in the system. All this knowledge and contacts help one to move around for more lucrative jobs in embassies.

And with all that ATS- Applicant Tracking System- you need to include hot “key words” and “job title” for describing your skill set. So, let's have a look at some tips for updating your resume to give you a better chance for the next interview call!

Match Your Skills With Your Dream Company's Requirements: Conduct a research about the company, organization, job assignments, position description, and job announcement. Ensure to highlight your knowledge, skills, and abilities with an organization’s need, mission, purpose, and goals. Make it as “to the point” and relevant as you can. Remember, the HR executive will not spend more than a minute reading all that!

Add Your Current Achievements: Workshops, professional training, new courses, distance learning, accomplished projects or awards- anything that is new to you- enhancement to your existing skills.

Delete What's Not Relevant: Do your first job still stands relevant? If not delete it. If, however, you see that they are still somewhat relevant then edit that portion. There's no harm if your first position gets the least attention.

Update Personal Contact: Don't forget to change your e-mail and cell phone number, if they need to be. If anyhow, in the past year, you have developed your own URL- add it. Personal blog? Add it only if it helps in evaluating you in relation to your job profile. Emotional write ups, film reviews and the like are not meant to help you professionally (of course if you are not in film or such other related jobs)

Give Your Resume Many Avatars: Your resume should be available in several formats -- e-resume, traditional format, text only, Microsoft Word, and a PDF. Each of these formats have their own use. They also reveal your technical savvy part to some extent.

Proofread Till You Exhaust: However confident you might be, proofread your updated resume time and again. Entering even a word means there's a chance of error, if only in a word or a sentence. Get your friends and family to proof read it for you.

A survey by Hewitt, an HR consultancy firm, predicted in February that salaries would continue to rise at an average of 8.2% in 2009. It further said that India was one of the safest options for employments because only 16% of the Indian companies were considering layoffs as an option whereas 55% of the US companies and 30.6% of the Chinese companies were considering layoffs as the most viable option. The survey also projected that about 60% companies were still thinking of hiring new employees. 9 out of 10 companies were also giving promotions to the right candidates. Handling a Possible Layoff while Still in Employment

Although the severe recession time is over, the risk is not all clear. It will take some more time for economy to get stable and recession to be wholly out of scene. So, along with knowing about how to keep your job safe during financial crisis, you must also be prepared for a layoff. Here are some ways to tackle with this grave problem.

Create an Emergency Fund: Keep some of your money aside to cover your basic living expenses for about six months. This should include paying your rent or mortgage, buying monthly supplies of food and repaying loan premiums. It will be wise to keep them away as short-term deposits so that you earn interest as well as they are available in the near future without any loss on interest.

Cut Back on Your Expenditures: Refrain from buying expensive items that are not basic to your living. In fact, this way you'll save money for your emergency fund too.

Keep Away Your Credit Cards: Don't be tempted with those credit cards. Debts call stress and they are complete “no no” when you are seeing layoff in the near future. If you have to use these cards, do it cautiously.

Enlarge Network: Try to get known to as many people as you can in your field of work. A lots of friends and contacts in industry means a better chance of finding work quickly in case you lose your job.

Enhance Your Skills: Use your downtime (when you are not working) as an opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge to a higher level. This can even help in making changes in your job profile- some other work that hasn't got affected by recession.

In these tough times, layoffs can come across anyone's way. Know how to talk to a friend who's been laid off. This may result in your friend helping you in your tough times!
